Cube 1: Manet. The purchase history.
"The Execution of Emperor Maximilian" (1868-69) by Edouard Manet (1832-1883) forms the heart of the Mannheim collection. The two-and-a-half by three meter historical painting was purchased in 1910 under Fritz Wichert with the financial support of nine citizens of Mannheim.
The founding director of the Kunsthalle Mannheim pursued ambitious visions for the museum and its collection. Despite all his hostilities, he focused on French art from the very beginning. Manet's "Execution of Emperor Maximilian" marks the beginning and at the same time the climax of his purchases. The purchase sparked a fierce quarrel and Wichert was particularly criticized by critics from nationalist circles.
