From the Work to the Display
How can the unique quality of an artwork be communicated in the digital space?
In the joint research project ‘From the Work to the Display’, Kunsthalle Mannheim and Kunstmuseum Stuttgart have developed innovative digital presentation forms for works in both collections.
A total of 22 works were selected from the genres of sculpture, painting, graphic art and installation, dating from the 19th century to the present day. Each work of art required a unique, initially unpredictable approach. The outcome is 22 episodes that get as close as possible to the works without distorting them in any way. Experimental, playful or scientific approaches were devised, depending on each work’s characteristics. For the museums, the project also represents a key experimental field in the development of a set of digital curatorial tools.
Discover the 11 digital pedestals featuring the Mannheim episodes in the immediate vicinity of the originals here in the Kunsthalle, or explore the full application using your own devices on the move or at home. ‘From the Work to the Display’ is an internet application that functions on all common browsers.
This several-year project has been facilitated by funds from the Digital Culture Programme of the Kulturstiftung des Bundes (German Federal Cultural Foundation).
