Intro

The »Strolling Woman« is one of Ernesto de Fiori’s best-known works and belongs to a group of female nudes he produced in Berlin between 1923 and 1924. Captured in a striding movement, the only item of clothing worn by these figures are their high-heeled shoes. De Fiori does not idealize the slim bodies, nor do his nudes radiate a mere everyday feeling. He depicts them instead in a self-confident and lively posture, possessed of an aura of self-assurance.

Not without reason, the »Strolling Woman« can be interpreted as a symbol for the modern woman in Berlin of the Golden Twenties. Emancipated and elegant, she goes her own way, combining erotic charisma and a cool reserve. De Fiori’s female nudes are among the most important figurative sculptural works of the early 20th century, and also represent a high point in the artist’s work.
