When we had to close the museum due to the corona crisis on March 14, 2020, our social media channels—Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter—remained active with our #KuMaChallenge. Staff members of Kunsthalle Mannheim regularly posted brief personal videos highlighting works from the collection and from current special exhibitions. Kunsthalle Mannheim’s director Johan Holten was first up. He chose George Grosz’s “Portrait of the Writer Max Herrmann-Neiße,” which he described as a symbol of the older and weaker people in our society who are currently at higher risk. Our wider community soon joined in with the #KuMaChallenge, contributing highly personal reflections on their own favorite works from our collection.
